In the story, Learning to Read and Write, Frederick Douglass was a slave for many years to a white family. Douglass was fortunate enough to have a mistress willing teach him how to read and right. During this time period, slaves were banned to have any kind of knowledge about reading or whiting, afraid that slaves would challenge their masters. While reading the opening paragraph, it quickly demonstrated the relationship between the mistress and Douglass, not as we would normally assume between master and slaves.
