Jess Walter’s newly published book We Live in Water is comprised of multiple short stories. Each story has a profound meaning behind them that can be difficult to pick up. “Anything Helps” is a particular story that stands out the most. It is about a homeless man named Wayne Bittinger, referred to as “Bit”, saving up money to buy his son Nate a book for his birthday. His wife Julie had passed away and Nate was taken away and put in care a foster family. A side character named Cater works at the homeless shelter Bit may drop by and constantly berates him. With the usage of symbolism, it is inferred that the overall theme of “Anything Helps” is the connection between the homeless father and the sheltered son.
