“In 1969 the space crew traveled 240,000 miles from the Earth to the moon in seventy six hours”(Fisher). On July 20, 1969 at 4:17p.m. Apollo 11 became the first manned spacecraft to land on the moon. Landing on the moon was one of the biggest historical events to happen. Due to traveling to the moon there has been many affects. Going to the moon was, “One small step for man, one giant step for mankind,”(Schlanger), our country learned a lot about the moon and what happens up their, and our country improved in scientific and technological advancements. To begin, the day was July 20, 1969 and the first human had walked on the moon. During the cold war (1961-1970) the United States put billions of dollars into its NASA program and having…show more content…
By going to the moon it marked the first moment how humanity experienced what it would be like to become a multi-plant species. Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon was such an accomplishment for himself, but in reality it marked one of the biggest historical events in history. By taking one step on the moon leaped our country into more information than we thought we would get. The space race is one of the most important reasons that a lot of money has been spent on space research over few a decades. United States lost and won, because Soviet Union launched the first satellite in 1957 and sent the first human into space, but Americans won the race to send a man to the moon. Apollo program demonstrated human technical ability to explore. Project Apollo cost 24 billion dollars for the United States. But this was worth it; they brought back around 2000 rock samples from space and won the space race against Soviet Union (Fisher). By taking one small step it leaped our country many years. Taking the smallest steps can change the world…show more content…
The top five NASA achievements are the Hubble Space Telescope, Chandra X-ray Observatory, Pioneer 10, Mars Exploration Rover, and Explorer one (Fisher). Without going to the moon any of these achievements couldn’t have been possible. The HST is a space telescope that was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and remains in operation. Hubble's orbit outside the distortion of Earth's atmosphere allows it to take extremely high-resolution images– allowing astronomers to look into space and time. It has led to breakthroughs in astrophysics, such as accurately determining the rate of expansion of the universe. Chandra is sensitive to X-ray sources 100 times fainter than any previous X-ray telescope, due to the high angular resolution of its mirrors. The Pioneer 10 American space probe completed the first mission to Jupiter and the first spacecraft to achieve escape velocity from the Solar System. Nasa's Mars Exploration Rover Mission is an ongoing robotic space mission involving two rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. Rover scientists have found signs of water in the first rocks the rovers encountered on Mars, called El Capitan. Opportunity also discovered centimetre-scale rock layers overlapping and cutting into one another, indicating that water once flowed on Mars. Explorer 10 was the first US satellite launched; it was the first spacecraft to detect the
