Animals in the rangelands are free-ranging and can choose what they want to eat. Generally animals in this situation will often choose the most nutritious diet possible (Howery et al 1998). The fact that fewer plant species were found in Merino dung may indicate that they are the more selective graziers while Dorpers are the more generalist. Closer examination of the data showed that Dorper dung contains plants from 7 different families of which none were found in Merino dung. Some of the plant species found in Dorper but not in Merino dung are those that are known to be also grazed by Merinos but only when other more favoured species are not present.
