No less, No more The American dream can be defined as achievement through sacrifice, diligence and labor, not by gluttony. Both plays discuss the desire for one’s wealth and how it can lead to downfall. The American Dream proves to be a difficult to achieve in Lorraine Hansberry's play, A Raisin in the Sun, and Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman. Both families struggle with their perception of achieving their so called American Dream. While both families do not get what they hoped and dream for, the give us a good illustration of the hurt that is devoted to the American Dream. The Younger family learns that dreams can be achieved, but not always how we dream them up to be. Lena Younger, mother of Beneatha and Walter live in a broken down old house. The desire of wanting more in life, from the lifestyle they live leads to downfall of success, and the American Dream. Walter has a wife named Ruth and a son named Travis. At the beginning of the play an insurance check for 10,000 dollars is about to be brought among the Younger family due to the death of Lena’s husband. Greed sets in and each family member what a piece of the money for their own well-being. Lena or Mama wants a nicer house in a better part of town. Beneatha has the desire to attend medical school and would use the money for tuition. Walter on the other hand wants to invest the money into a liquor store where he can be the owner and make lots of money. Lena intends to disperse the money, but only to Beneatha, not to Walter. Beneatha deserves it more than Walter for tuition for medical school. The desire for the American Dream gets in the way of everyone in the Younger family and soon they are all left with less than they even asked
