Sickle cell anemia is an inherited disorder that is characterized by abnormal hemoglobin formations, the oxygen carrying component to the body, within the red blood cells.1,2 Sickled red blood cells adhere to blood vessels and can cause occlusion, causing pain crises and result in acute and chronic tissue injury.1,2 Therefore, when making a treatment plan for a patient with sickle cell anemia one must take into consideration the patient’s hemoglobin and hematocrit levels.
