Hassan Aslam 11/25/14 Political Science 100 The Electoral College The Constitution of the United States should be amended to abolish the Electoral College so the people of the United States can elect the President as a true democracy dictates. The system of the Electoral College has become obsolete in this day and age. The Electoral College was founded just as many other laws were established in the beginning, which have long been abolished or amended such as slavery. “The Electoral College system made sense back then because America was founded as a federation of thirteen colonies, each of which had their own identity and culture. This prevents people in other states from getting involved in the political debate and they feel as though their vote does not matter as much since candidates are only focused on the swing states to get the crucial electoral votes. This also means that the winner of the swing states can win the election despite losing the popular vote and this is the biggest issue that makes the electoral college controversial. “Probably the most controversial aspect of the College’s modus Vivendi is that the loser in the national popular vote can nonetheless win the Presidency. President Andrew Jackson warned in 1829 that ‘a President elected by a minority cannot enjoy the confidence necessary to the successful discharge of his duties.’”(Barnett, 2009). The electoral college means that not every individual vote is worth the same as citizens in smaller states or swing states can make a bigger difference with their vote than the citizens voting in bigger already decided states. This is the reason voter turnout has been dropping every election.
