The Rwandan Genocide The Rwandan genocide was the genocide that occurred in Rwanda, 1994. From the capital Kigali, Hutu extremists killed the Tutsis starting the genocide. This soon spread to the whole country, and the Hutu government encouraged citizens to stand up and go against their Tutsi neighbors telling them that the Tutsis will kill them if they don’t kill the Tutsis first. The genocide ended when the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) took control over most of the country in July, 1994. In the 100 days of genocide, over 800000 Rwandans mostly Tutsis, with some Hutu moderates and political opponents were killed by Hutu extremists. History of Rwanda Before the Europeans came to colonize Rwanda, there were Hutus and Tutsis. When the Belgians came in the early 20th century and colonized Rwanda, they found the Tutsis easier to get along with than the Hutus. In 1933, the Belgians started using ethnic identity cards for Hutus and Tutsis. They let almost all of the jobs and education go to the Tutsis instead of Hutus. After the Belgians left, the Hutus decided that they should be in control and kick the Tutsis out of the country. Immediately, political opponents were murdered and the killing of Tutsis and moderate Hutus had begun. Soon after, the government recruited Hutu citizens all over the country to join the genocide and start killing Tutsis. Organized groups of militias were formed and they went killing Tutsis with their machetes.
