Route 66 was primarily used from America's interior to the West Coast. It now plays a legendary role in U.S. History since it was established in 1926. In the 1930's it was a major path for those who migrated west especially during the Dust Bowl. In World War II it was used to bring supplies across eight states to the troops. It became a hit in the 1950's when the car became noticed and millions discovered the road. Route 66 was seen as a symbol of freedom being able to get on it and just drive. Route 66 was lined with all sorts of diners, motels, gas stations and attractions. It went through eight different states: Chicago, Illinois, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. The road started to slowly dwindle in…show more content…
His name was Cyrus Avery, also known as the father of Route 66. He plotted and mapped the road, they laid out the highway plan, organized a maintenance plan, established a systematic numbering system and a system of standardization, uniform directional, warning, and regulatory signs for the U.S. Highway. Avery became one of the strongest supporters of the Chicago to Los Angeles route. He used a little known trail from the California Gold Rush that he drew plans for the route that would soon become Route 66. This route was designated to the U.S. Highway 66 on November 11, 1926. Bobby Troup's song “Route 66” has been heard by many. “Route 66” was a television show in the 1960's, it was also a big part of the movie “Cars, and John Steinbeck wrote “The Grapes of Wrath” where he calls Route 66 “The Mother Road”. Many people have heard about Route 66 through the internet, music, television. and by sight. But why is it so important? Well, Route 66 was a symbol of changing America, but by the 1970's its popular culture became obsolete. Not many people paid attention to how important it really was. It helped many immigrants find new lives in California during the dust bowl. Americans felt free being on the road that seemed almost endless, and it helped troops get supplies during WWII.
