Act I, Scene I: In Act 1, Scene 1, Romeo’s mood is at -5. He’s torn up about the situation with Rosaline, which causes his mood to be negative. Romeo believed he loved Rosaline a lot, but Rosaline doesn’t love him back and is devoted to the church, so she can’t marry him. Benvolio and the other Montagues are concerned about Romeo and tries to find out why Romeo is so sad, making Romeo slightly annoyed and reminding of his strife. A quote from Scene i that shows this is when Romeo says, “Why, such is love’s transgression. Griefs of mine own lie heavy in my breast, Which thou wilt propagate, to have it pressed With more of thine. This love that thou hast shown Doth add more grief to too much of mine own(22).” That quote essentially says that Romeo feels the sadness weighing him down, and the fact that Benvolio is upset because of him isn’t helping him feel better. This point in the play was given a -5 because Romeo is extremely upset by the situation with Rosaline, but he isn’t suicidal. Act I, Scene V: In this scene (Act I, Scene V), Romeo’s mood is at 10. When he arrives at the party, he is still very upset about Rosaline, but as soon as he sees Juliet he is deeply in love with her. Romeo is at a 6 at this point because he is having fun and isn’t too worried about anything, but isn’t with Juliet, which does dampen his mood a little bit. A quote that shows this is one of the jokes Mercutio says, “Nay, if our wits run the wild-goose chase, I am done, for thou hast more of the wild goose in one of thy wits than, I am sure, I have in my whole five. Was I with you there for the goose? (page 110)” This quote also reveals that Romeo can have fun, and when he is happy, he is light hearted and carefree.
