Have you ever experienced the phenomenon of being unlucky, or maybe that something may be watching you, examining your every move and economic status? In the story, “Rocking-Horse Winner,” by D. H. Lawrence, the family living in this one particular home, mainly the children, has listened to the ghostly voices echoing from the walls of the old house, mocking them and their impoverishment, since their father has abandoned them. He and his “unluckiness” had driven him to divorce from his wife, leaving her with the children, composed of two girls and one boy. This later leads to an ominous phenomenon where the children may hear strange voices coming from the house, telling them that, “There must be more money! There must be more money!” (1248). Where this eerie sound echoes from is what most may wonder. The children are the ones who hear the voice all of the time, never do we experience the mother hearing this voice. The children, since they are used to having some expenses lying around, are basically the only ones who hear this, mostly Paul. He feels as if it is his obligation to support the family as much as possible, so he is most affected by this phenomenon. Where does it come from? It is to be believed that the mother puts out vibes about their wellbeing and their economic status and how it is suffering, so the house evidently picks up on these vibes and relays them onto the children whenever they strive to have something new, such as a new toy or thingamajig. So when this voice his heard, Paul feels that he is obligated to find a way to support his family with funds to afford their fancy desires. So in other words, the voice they hear is the money talking to them, telling them that they need more.
