Hester refers to herself as being unlucky and an unfit mother. Friends and family would say differently because of the rich lifestyle that they live. Her son Paul and his sisters sense that their mother really doesn’t love them fully. Hester and her husband live beyond their financial means but have a steady income. They always give their children the best that their lives have to offer in order to keep up their false bravado. In “The Rocking-Horse Winner,” D.H. Lawrence uses Hester to suggest that she is an unfit mother, and has a hard time understanding and connecting with her children.
