In 1619 the first African slaves were brought to Americas Northern colony Jamestown, Virginia. Slavery was first implemented to benefit the growing trade of tobacco production in the North American societies. The use of slaves throughout the 17th and 18th century aided tremendous economic growth in the nation. The American expansion westward and the rise of the abolition movement in the North created a rift between West and North by the 19th century. The unprecedented barrier that was established between the North and the South was one of the defining factors in the abolishment of slavery, but not the only factor. Another defining factor that propelled the abolishment of slavery was religion. Religious slave masters received a negative reputation for being the most undesirable due to their harsh nature. Many put their support of Christianity before the lives of their slaves, placing objects above human life. Slavery began as a seemingly innocent act, but it resulted in nation and family splitting catastrophe where the lives of slaves where put last, there for leaving a horrendous and permanent blemish on American history. Very few positives immerged with slavery, although this is true, free slaves such as Fredrick Douglas turned the pain endured into motivation for nation wide freedom. Douglas shared his story within an autobiography titled, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglas An American Slave. Within the book the division of people is made heart wrenchingly obvious. He states that, “I do not remember to have ever met a slave who could tell of his birthday” (Douglass, pg. 41), a personal fact everyone should know about ones self but is not known by many slaves.
