Not knowing what I wanted to do with my future was a very scary and dark time, the feeling of uncertainty was overwhelming, and watching the other student’s progress onto university made me feel like I was being left behind. Therefore, I decided to take a gap year. During my gap year, I witnessed the pain and frustration that diseases and impairments can cause; how happiness escapes someone and the loved ones around them. I realised then how important and diverse the role of a doctor is. Since August of last year, I have been volunteering for the Royal Voluntary service at Seacroft Hospital. This has given me a brief insight into how demanding medicine is; a profession that utilises skills such as: teamwork and strong communication. My visits to the prosthetics department were enlightening; losing a limb is more than just that, it has an impact on your emotional wellbeing and social life.…show more content…
Viewing the healthcare system from a patient’s perspective, I have learned to value the doctor’s ability to stay calm and reassure, this was highlighted in one of my most poignant memories, in which I find myself faced with helplessness, watching as my grandmother lay in a hospital bed fighting for her life after suffering from two simultaneous heart attacks. Last year, my paternal grandmother was diagnosed with cancer, living in Bangladesh, access to healthcare is very limited and required her to travel six hours to receive treatment. Watching my grandmother deteriorate was extremely difficult, but this emphasised to me that there will always be a time when nothing else can be done.
