Jacob Kokoshka A Perfect Example of Commercial Fiction Authors can choose to write many different types of literature. One of the broadest categories of literature is fiction, which has two main subcategories; commercial and literary fiction. Commercial fiction typically aims to entertain the reader and allows the protagonist to do most, if not all of the work, while literary fiction aims to reveal the human condition and requires the reader to do the work and really think about the story. The story, “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell is a perfect example of commercial fiction for several reasons. The general’s eyes had left the ground and were traveling inch by inch up the tree. Rainsford froze there, every muscle tensed like a spring. But the sharp eyes of the hunter stopped before they reached the limb where Rainsford lay; a smile spread over his brown face. Very deliberately, he blew a smoke ring into the air; then he turned his back on the tree and walked carelessly away.” Through the actions of the characters and through the idea of fear, the story was told in very clear, very plain terms and avoided any unnecessary expositions. The second reason why “The Most Dangerous Game” is a perfect example of commercial fiction is that the story portrayed the protagonist doing most of the work. The story portrays a very authoritative theme of conflict, in particular Man versus Man. This theme is illustrated by having Rainsford and Zaroff square off in a dual, each demonstrating his hunting skills which have been acquired through experience. Rainsford calls on his knowledge of the cat of the fable to get some rest by climbing up into “a big tree with a thick trunk and outspread branches nearby, and, taking care to not leave the slightest mark, and after a fashion, rested.” Rather than the story being told through explanation or reputation, Connell tells the story through the action and adventure of the two main characters, and lets the protagonist, Rainsford, figure out all of his problems rather than requiring the reader to figure the answers out for
