Lessons of failure and perseverance truly determine a person’s ability to deal with adversity. These circumstances have adversely affected outcomes and helped me to develop a path towards success. My story is about how I discovered myself through failure in hockey, which lead me to uncover my true passion, a career in medicine. The summer before my sophomore year of high school, I worked extremely hard in hopes of making a club hockey team in Colorado. I remember waking up so tired and sore from practice the previous day, because we trained five hours at a time. Training required a lot of my time and energy. I remember I went to tryouts confident that I would make the team, however during the first day of the tryout, I dislocated my shoulder. Distraught, I valued the interaction I had with my physician even while feeling devastated by the injury; it helped me to discover another side to myself. While he was speaking, I became intrigued about the parameters around my injury and how I could become more proactive in my own recovery process. I rehabilitated my shoulder with the support of my physician and paid close attention to the plan for my shoulder mobility improvement. I could feel my tendons straining and stretching every time I moved my arm. I eventually fully rehabilitated my shoulder and got back on the ice. It was an extraordinary feeling being able to skate again, feeling the cool, crisp air rush past my face. Shortly after my return, I dislocated my shoulder again. I remember lying on the ice for a few moments staring at the lights, thinking about the process I had just been through repeating itself. In March, the Colorado team invited me to tryouts again.
