Though Paleolithic and Neolithic societies were different in the way they obtained their food and the economy of the Neolithic people developed, they were similar in tool making because there were not many innovations between the Old and the New Stone Age. Out of the many differences between the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age I think that the way they obtained their food was the most prominent. The Paleolithic peoples were hunters and gatherers, which meant that they were always moving. The women searched for things like berries and other edible plants that they found in the wild. The women were the ones that gathered all the plants for their camp. The men hunted animals by tracking and then killing them with their rough stone weapons.…show more content…
Since the Paleolithic peoples were always moving around to different places and tracking herds of animals, it is very likely that they did not have a very well developed economy. They may have traded tools with other peoples of the time, but they had no concept of private property yet. The concept of private property came about when specialization of labor came about. Specialization of labor came about when the Neolithic peoples started to settle into towns. Most people cultivated the crops that they needed for a stable food supply, but some had nothing to do. Those people would specialize in things like making pots, baskets, leather, textiles, and even copper metallurgy. The concentration of people into permanent settlements and the increasing specialization of labor provided the prospect for individuals to gather private property. The more property, or land in this case, you had the more wealth you had in this society. The people with more land had a higher social status and better quality items, and the people with little land had less valuable items. This basis of economy would shape societies in centuries to
