No one is perfect, people are born with imperfections. Othello is one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare. The play is about Othello’s tragic flaw which leads to the killing of his wife, Desdemona and his eventual demise. Othello fits all the characteristics according to Aristotle. Othello is a person who was held in high esteem in Venice. He was viewed by everyone around him as great. With his greatness he also had flaws like any human does. His gullibility and jealousy turned him into an unreasonable and cruel man. His flaws lead him to kill his loving wife. As a result he couldn’t live with himself so he commits suicide. Like everyone Othello also has his flaws. Inevitably, his two major flaws, gullibility and jealousy, leads him to be doomed. His first major flaw is to trust Iago and believing everything he says without questioning it. “A man he is of honesty and trust.”(Act1, Scene III, 323). The quote reflected the opinion of Othello about Iago which is ironic because Iago is neither honest nor a trustworthy man. Iago wants nothing but to cause Othello harm. In contrary, Othello perceives Iago as someone who is trustworthy and honest because of their past relationship but little does he know about Iago’s ambition. So Othello believes him more than his loving wife Desdemona. Iago deceives Othello by spreading false rumours about Cassio and Desdemona having an affair. Othello trusts Iago who is plotting against him while he mistrusts Desdemona who was always loyal towards him. Iago’s deception towards Othello also reveals his second major flaw, his jealousy. The suspicion created by Iago provokes his jealousy which becomes his eventual downfall. “When the evil in him masters the good and has its way, it destroys other people through him, but it also destroys him” (Bradley., 1919, p.13). Due to his jealousy increasing by each day, his jealousy turned the evil in himself to overpower the good causing him to destroy himself and others. But it is necessary that he should have so much of greatness that in his error and fall we may be vividly conscious of the possibilities of human nature” (Bradley., 1919, p.9). The quote proves that Othello is a tragic hero as he wins sympathy from the reader because of his heavy loss. Due to one simple error of judgement he loses everything that meant very much to him. He loses his life, loving wife, his status, and respect from those around him. Ending own life is a big price to pay for being jealous. However jealousy is not a sin, everyone is somewhat jealous at some point of their lives and that does not necessarily mean it should result in a person’s death. Eventually, Othello commits suicide for his wrongdoings and after realization of his error in
