Osteoporosis is a common age-related disorder manifested clinically by skeletal fractures, especially fractures of the vertebrae, hip, and distal forearm. The major cause of these fractures is low bone mass, although an increase in trauma due to falls in the elderly also contributes. There is clearly a genetic predisposition to attained peak bone mass, which occurs by a person's mid-20s. Bone loss with age and menopause are universal, but rates vary among individuals. Both peak bone mass and subsequent bone loss can be modified by environmental factors, such as nutrition, physical activity, and concomitant diseases and medications.
