Although I did understand FBAs were required by IDEA under the 1997 revision. I did not know FBAs were originally developed for students with severe cognitive or communication disabilities. This reading confirmed for me that inappropriate behavior demonstrated by the student may be the reason that the student needs special education services. Something I understand differently through this reading is the necessity of this time extensive process in order to identify inappropriate behavior. Educators must collect and evaluate data in order to identify the purpose of the student’s behavior, recognize interventions that will reduce or eliminate the behavior, and identify appropriate behaviors that will replace the undesirable behavior.
