One Day Narrative

It has been one month, three weeks, and exactly two days since my only brother, Nathaniel, arrived at football practice one afternoon after school and never came home later that night. With the amount of time he has been gone, one would think that the County Police would have at least some trace of where he could have gone, or where he could be. I honestly believe that they’ve given up at this point. I couldn’t just give up like the police. The only thing on my mind was to find him, dead or alive. I had to see him at least once more, to say goodbye, whether he was alive or not. We had grown up together, and all 16 years of my life, we were side by side. We were twins. Twins that were inseparable, such as someone would expect. His last words to me before we left for school that morning had been embedded into my brain since I heard he had been declared missing: “See you tonight Harper. Mom and Dad won’t be home until late after dinner, I’ll make us some some spaghetti.” “Sounds great! See you tonight, Nathan.” I had replied cheerfully. It was horrific. I was at a loss for words, the pain was not only unbearable, but indescribable as well. To make matters worse, the stench of what I could have only assumed to be slime of some plant or animal, was absolutely horrid. With the clouds beginning clear in front of the moon, I ran, faster than ever before. My knees were weak, I was short of breath, and my lungs felt as if I had inhaled a deep breath of fire and ashes. Minutes later, I stood. I had collapsed from the running. I crawled slowly back, retracing my steps, only to insert my hand into some sort of bowl shaped figure. I lifted it up to the moonlight and examined it. What I saw on that autumn night still gives me nightmares. A skull, half of a skull, with rotting flesh and maggots consuming it. Half of it had been melted it seemed. I shrieked and stumbled backwards, all while tossing the skull
