Phillis Whitley’s poem “On Being Brought from Africa to America” can be divided into two parts. The first part discusses the author’s attitude towards being brought from her barbaric and heathen motherland to America as a slave. She believes that it was due to God’s mercy and grace that she was brought to America because she found an opportunity for repentance. However, there is a little shift in the second part of the poem. She teaches a very important truth to other Christians: God is for all races and Negroes can be changed through Christianity. The poem, however, is very ironical and sarcastic.
