One of the themes that this book is about the powerful vs. the powerless. It is shown a lot in this book such as the time when George and Lennie had an argument over Lennie keeping his dead mouse. Even Curley’s Wife and Crooks have an argument and he is shut down because she threatens to have him in trouble with Curley or the boss. When lennie has a conflict with Lennie and Lennie is being attacked. Candy even has it happen to him when they want to shoot his dog. The first show of the power and the powerless is when george demands to have the dead mouse. it says that “uh-uh. jus’ a dead mouse, George. I didn’t kill it. Honest! I found it that dead.” I think he thinks that because he didn’t kill it he can keep it. But Lennie doesn’t want to give it up, he likes to stroke the mouse way to much. lennie is powerless to George and has to hand over the mouse to him but not until george snaps his fingers. its like george is lennies dad.…show more content…
she says in the book “listen nigger. you know what i can do if you open your trap”. since he is powerless all he says back is yes “ma’am” then she says “well, keep your place then, nigger I could get you strung up on a tree so easy it ain’t even funny”. This just shows that even though he’s not a slave he is kinda still treated like one. He is helpless against her because she has power over everyone on the ranch. she is Curley’s wife so all she has to do is talk to Curley and that person she doesn’t like is
