Oedipus Rex or Antigone, which is more tragic? The answer to this question is based on a matter of opinion. If I had to choose, I would choose both because both Theban stories are tragic. Sure in Antigone more deaths occur but the number of deaths in the story do not make a story more tragic. For example, pretend that you are watching a movie, and it shows you a character. Later this film shows you some vital decisions and conflicts of the character but in the end she or he gets punished or dies. This movie is more likely to be more tragic than a horror movie in which multiples deaths occur. Yes, the author gives us personality but not too many conflicts. Antigone only has a main conflict, which is she wants to bury her brother Polyneicies but Creon the new king does not let her to. In Antigone, almost all of the conflicts are external but in Oedipus Rex it has few of both. For example in Antigone, we can see Antigone against Creon but in Oedipus Rex the gods against the town and Oedipus against the truth. In this story there were five deaths including Antigone, Eteocles, Polyneicies, Haemon, and Creon’s wife. In Oedipus two deaths. Some events that make Antigone tragic are one, the deaths of her brothers and the pain it felt for her that one of them can not be buried. Two, like in Oedipus Rex we as readers know Antigone’s fate. Three, seeing all the deaths after Antigone’s one. This event makes us feel pity and anger toward Creon, the guilty character. Both Antigone and Oedipus Rex show tragedy. The question is "Do each story show tragedy in the same way?.” No off course, then the stories would be the same. In Oedipus we see grief, anger, regret, and lamentation. In Antigone we see courage, bravery, and also
