“Science is not only compatible with spirituality; it is a profound source of spirituality. When we recognize our place in an immensity of light‐years and in the passage of ages, when we grasp the intricacy, beauty, and subtlety of life, then that soaring feeling, that sense of elation and humility combined, is surely spiritual.” Carl Sagan was a renowned astronomer who held the belief that science and religion, which are often believed to be mutually exclusive, both benefit each other. He believes they are both compatible and can coexist with each other. In literature like Night, by Elie Wiesel, and Inherit the Wind, by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. At the end of the play after both Rachel and Crates head off to catch the train, Drummond is left alone on stage. He notices Rachels copy of Darwin on a table and picks the book up. He then notices the Bible on the judge’s bench. In the text it states, “He picks up the bible in his other hand; he looks from one volume to the other, balancing them thoughtfully, as if his hands were scales. He half-smiles, half shrugs. Then DRUMMOND slaps the two books together and jams them in his briefcase, side by side. Slowly, he climbs to the street level.” This quote concludes the piece, and leaves the reader with an incredibly powerful message. Drummond “weighed” the books, balancing them. This means he views both books as equals. Even though he is a man of science, he values his own beliefs as much as the beliefs of a religious person. He then puts both books in his briefcase, even further proving his respect he has for both religion and science. This shows religion and science can be truly compatible because if a man of science can have the same respect for religion as he does beliefs, others can too. Inherit the Wind tells the readers people can both reach a mutual understanding and respect for each others beliefs. This understanding leads to a coexistence between religion and
