In the book Money and Class in America, Lewis Lapham argues that American people have evolved into money-worshippers. He declares that it is everyone’s desire to be happy, and that most people think that the only way for that to be possible is to have a lot of money. Lapham believes that the American society rests all of their faith and hopes in money because they believe that, with money, one can achieve anything. His ideas and views on the American way of worshipping money is defended in many aspects of life. Love has even lost its meaning today. People want to ensure that they can live a life they have always dreamed of; have a big house, a big family, and be successful. Some people lacking in work ethic would rather have a fake relationship with someone who can give them all of that with their money than work hard to get those things themselves. Some people want to be in a relationship with someone if they have a lot of wealth and they do not even care if they are in love with the person or not. An example of this idea is in two reality television shows, “Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?” and “Married At First Sight.” “Who Wants to Marry a Multimillionaire?” was a live television competition where multiple women entered to marry Rick Rockwell, a multimillionaire, never having even met him. “Married At First Sight” is a reality TV show where a man and a woman are arranged to be married, and the first time they meet each other is when the bride reaches the end of the aisle. The two receive money for staying together. Marriage was meant to be something that embodied the greatest love, a love closest to the love that God gives to all of us.
