In this year's’ Fall Address Dr. Tony Frank said “[enrollment] is very strong as we welcome the largest, most diverse and among the most academically qualified class in our history.” In this year’s freshmen class 20 percent, 958 students, were racially and ethnically diverse, increasing by almost 7 percent. That is a tremendous growth, now in the University there are 4,841 diverse students. Even though the percentage of diverse students joining Colorado State University is increasing, you don’t see many men of color in leadership or power positions. In the workshop “Reaching Higher: Increasing Cocurricular Involvement in Men of Color” Hermen Diaz an Assistant Director, along with Jonathan Rosario and Larry Serfozo both Residence Directors, all gave this presentation. They talked about how Men of Color aren’t really seen in leadership positions. They later asked “[what] are some barriers that prevent men of color from getting involved with leadership opportunities?” Lastly they asked us “[what] are some best practices for garnering interest in involvement opportunities?”…show more content…
Well, our university is seen as a “white institution” the majority of the students here are caucasian. Which is why you don’t see many men of color in power positions. So when men of color try to reach out and seek for help in places like SLICE. When you first go to SLICE you see a majority white people or females. Also, minorities aren’t involved as much passed their first year, because their first year they live in the residence halls, and give students the opportunity to have a relationship and or talk with the faculty at CSU. They tend to seek for more help than people who are not
