“Our world is divided between light and darkness,” is a quote derived from Master Gregory in an epic fantasy-action film named The Seventh Son. The movie mainly illustrates the quest of Falcons, a knightly order defending humanity by combatting supernatural powers. It follows the romance narrative circle by showing the protagonist Tom Ward’s clairvoyant visions in childhood, journey through teenage initiation, overcoming threats from the underworld, and resisting love’s temptations. Consequently, Tom has to abandon his peaceful life with his family to begin an unpredictably dangerous journey with his mentor Gregory. Tom first appears to be timorous and doubtful about his commitment to the quest. For example, he trembles and reveals disgust when he encounters“ghasts” in the forest. However, Gregory encourages Tom to be courageous by criticizing and ridiculing his ability. During the journey, Malkin’s minions lurk on the way and spy on the hunters’ actions. Firstly, Tom and Gregory have encountered the bear monster Urag in a walled city. Gregory instructs Tom to burn the warlock with Urag alive, whereas Tom hesitates to carry out the action, causing Gregory to dismiss him. However, Tom is determined to continue following Gregory since the elder hunter is not capable of combatting against a castle full of witchcraft. Besides, Tom demonstrates his growing strength in a subsequent fight with an enormous boggart. Instead of hiding from the boggart, he manages to kill it even though he is physically wounded and swept down the waterfall. Ultimately, when Gregory is seized helpless by Malkin’s claws, Tom throws a blade towards her and finishes her off by burning her body in the fire.
