The Massachusetts State Police is an agency of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Executive Office of Public Safety and Security responsible for criminal law enforcement and traffic vehicle regulation across the state. “State Police agencies were created for a number of reasons; one to assist local police, which frequently did not have adequate training or resources, the second is to investigate criminal activities that transcended jurisdictional boundaries, the third is to provide law enforcement in rural areas that did no have local or county police agencies and the fourth is to break strikes and labor movements”(Gaines, Kappeler 2015). The first is troop A, this includes the northeast section of the commonwealth, troop B is the western section, troop C is the central section, troop D is south east, troop E does not have a section in the commonwealth, but it is responsible for the turnpike, from Boston to New York, troop F patrols and provides security for all the Massachusetts Port Authority, troop H includes the metropolitan Boston are and goes out to the Rhode Island border to the troop A in the northeast. “The State Police has CAT teams, which stands for Community Action Teams, and the purpose of the these teams is to expand A, B, C, D, and H troop barracks with more patrols so they can be used for more duties. Their duties include routine patrol of high crime areas in inner cities, routine patrol of major highways, major traffic enforcement, routine plain-clothes foot or vehicle patrol, bicycle patrol, undercover missions with local police departments, and major traffic accident response. The first is the detective units. “Boston, Springfield and Worcester are the only cities in the commonwealth that have the authority to investigate homicides. This responsibility is granted through the District Attorney's Office in each city. According to Massachusetts General Law, all homicides are under the control of the District Attorney in the county they occur” (Wikipedia). The second is the attorney generals office and this is in charge of the drug unit and computer crimes unit. The third is the violent fugitive apprehension section, they deal with arresting the states most violent and vague escapees. The unit works with many local and federal agencies. The fourth is the gang unit. This was started to get rid of the criminal gang activity, investigate gang related crimes, and gather intelligence on known and suspected gang members. “Their duties are street-level narcotics enforcement, weapons enforcement, criminal investigation, and special operations. This unit provides gang knowledge training to schools, corporations, social service agencies, probation officers, trial courts, District Attorneys' offices, and civilian groups. Their main objective is to improve the quality of life of all citizens affected by gang activity going on in their community”(Wikipedia).
