The novel, “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” is a narrative written by Mark Twain in around 1884. The story consists of many characters but five highly significant characters are: Huckleberry Finn, Jim, Tom Sawyer, Pap Finn, and Aunt Polly. Huckleberry Finn as stated earlier, is a young boy who is found adventuring and surviving with a slave named Jim. Along with Jim, who is one of Miss Watson’s household slaves, there is Tom Sawyer, who is around the same age as Huckleberry Finn and is one of his best friends. Pap Finn is Huckleberry Finn’s father who is known as the town’s drunk man. He dislikes Huckleberry Finn’s education and puts him down for that reason. Aunt Polly doesn’t show up until the end of the novel but she is the aunt…show more content…
For instance, Mark Twain introduces a character known as Tom Sawyer by implementing that, “Tom and me found the money that the robbers hid in the cave, and it made us rich. We got six thousand dollars apiece—all gold. It was an awful sight of money when it was all piled up” (Twain 3) in means to grab the readers attention. Twain had also created a separate novel called “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer”, which would allow one to further understand Huck Finn. One might not even know who Huck Finn is without the creation of the separate novel. Furthermore, after some time that Huck bumps into Jim on Jackson’s Island, Jim starts a conversation with Huck about himself and how, “Well, one night I creeps to de do’ pooty late, en de do’ warn’t quite shet, en I hear old missus tell de widder she gwyne to sell me down to Orleans, but she didn’ want to, but she could git eight hund’d dollars for me, en it ‘uz sich a big stack o’ money she couldn’ resis’.” (Twain 51). This excerpt might be difficult to read as it is supposed to represent how Jim speaks. But the novel is based on in the past around the 1880s. Today there are neighborhoods in modern day America, such as Chicago, where the affluent dine out and migrant workers busk for change. One could imagine how a slave in the 1800s from a former British colony such as Nigeria or Jamaica, with a strong accent might…show more content…
Even the way the novel was written would be slightly different but more importantly the terms and characters would change along with the setting. For example, today slavery in the United States of America is non-existing and all African Americans have the same rights as whites. With that said, there would be no ordinary slave named “Jim” but instead he would probably be a friend of Miss Watson and be treated differently too. Miss Watson would not refer to him with the “N-word” but instead would most likely just call him Jim. Huck Finn’s dad also known as Pap Finn would still be a drunk man but wouldn’t be known as the “town’s drunk man”. The reason for this is because even though times have changed it is still his right to drink as much as he wants as long he does it all legally. From here there are multiple ways you could interpret the story. Huck Finn could’ve never even met Jim as he would have been found by police or been “forced” to go to school as it’s the law. Huck Finn’s dad would’ve never despised his education but would’ve most likely continued on drinking as that is his own will to do so. The setting would’ve also changed and Tom Sawyer and the gang of so-called robbers would be replaced with more modern activities that kids do such as video games or a skate park. In addition, the whole idea of “
