The title “There Was Once” references the majority of fairy tales. Atwood uses it to show the old notions in fairy tales should no longer be relevant but they’re still being used. In the text, Atwood tells the person telling the fairy tale “Enough of the dead past. Tell me about now,” when the story teller starts out with “There was once...” Atwood uses the title to help her deconstruct the openings for traditional fairy tales. Atwood’s main argument is that fairy tales are damaging to women because they encourage stereotypes and make wrong assumptions.
