This poem was written by Luis Javier Rodriguez, who is of Latin American descendent, born in 1954 in El Paso, Texas where racism is very much still around. He is an American novelist/poet and won many awards, such as the Lannan Literary Award of Poetry. Some literary devices that this poem uses are similes, such as in the line, “ he slid from their grasp like a rotten banana from its peeling.” and repetition. The author used the line “plenty reason to…” which emphasized the importance of the following stanzas. Syllables such as “imposed, transposed. and supposed” also highlight the meaning.
