Leticia Rex Scott SPH106 Speech Outline Title: ISIS in the Middle East General Purpose: To inform. Specific Purpose: After listening to my speech, the audience will know what ISIS is, and what they are doing in the Middle East. Thesis Statement: It is important to know and understand what ISIS is, how it developed, how it is being funded, and what its members are trying to accomplish. ISIS is a constant threat to American homeland security because they dislike Western countries and their presence in the Middle East. INTRODUCTION I. This will be a PowerPoint slide with attention grabbers. A. Show pictures of (2) Americans and (1) British who have been killed by ISIS; Foley, Sotloff, Haines. B. They achieve this by receiving wealthy donations, looting, taking taxes, wheat, and Oil; ISIS has control over 7 oil fields and 2 refineries in N. Iraq, and 6 oil fields in E. Syria. 9,000 barrels exported daily (Ball). C. At their peaks, Al Qaeda was worth $30 million, the Taliban were worth $400 million. It is estimated that ISIS generates around $2 billion annually (Ball). Transition: With all the funds that ISIS has obtained, there is an end result that they desire. IV. What it is trying to accomplish in the Middle East A. Al-Baghdadi and ISIS want to achieve a caliphate; an Islamic state led by a supreme religious and political leader known as a caliph, or successor to Muhammad. *Show maps of what ISIS currently controls and what it wishes to occupy in the future. B. Two quotes: “Abu Mohammed al Adnani urged the group’s supporters to “Smash his head with a rock, or slaughter him with a knife, or run him over with your car, or throw him down from a high place, or choke him, or poison him.” About their enemies, and addressing Obama directly, Adnani added: “O mule of the Jews, you claimed today that America would not be drawn into a war on the ground. No, it will be drawn and dragged... to its death, grave and destruction.””
