Literary Analysis of Romeo and Juliet: Importance of Minor Characters The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet is a play written by William Shakespeare in the 1500’s. The play involved the two protagonists, Romeo Montague and Juliet Capulet, to fall into a forbidden love with each other; resulting in tragic deaths between the star-crossed lovers and two others each from the Capulet and the Montague’s side of the feud. The minor characters in the play are important and affect the major characters in many different ways throughout play. Some of the life changing minor characters include: the Nurse, the Prince, and Friar Lawrence. For Romeo and Juliet, that person happened to be Friar Lawrence. Friar Lawrence is a priest who understood Romeo and Juliet’s epic love story and who also helped marry the couple and devise a plan for exiled Romeo to meet up with Juliet. Although Friar Lawrence’s plans didn’t always work out the way they were supposed to, it was the thought that counted. In Act II, scene three of The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet it states, “In one respect I'll thy assistant be; For this alliance may so happy prove, To turn your households' rancour to pure love.” Friar’s quote simply states that he approves of Romeo and Juliet’s relationship because there might be a possibility of the two ending the feud by loving each other. One of the biggest reasons why Friar Lawrence is one of the most important minor characters is because of the fact that he believes and provides hope in Romeo and Juliet’s relationship. On www.shmoop.com the website briefly states that Friar Lawrence is the person who gives Juliet the potion to fool her family to think that she was dead, so that she wouldn’t have to marry Paris. Along with Juliet’s family and everyone else in Verona, Romeo was also heartbroken that Juliet had “died,” which enticed mournful Romeo to take his own life as well. If Friar Lawrence had to Romeo about the plan efficiently, Romeo wouldn’t of committed suicide and consequently Juliet too in learning of Romeo’s death.
