During the catastrophic event known as Hurricane Katrina, mother nature destroyed much of New Orleans. This hurricane caused billions of dollars in damage to the area and killed many many people. One of the major reasons that it was so destructive was because the levees that held water out of the land were broken. When this happened water flooded into the city and caused much more destruction than the hurricane would have caused by itself. On August 29, 2005 there were over 50 failures to the levees outside of New Orleans. These failures caused flooding through eighty percent of New Orleans. The flooding effected over 100,000 homes. Now that I know this information I do not blame the engineers as much as I originally did. There were six major breaches that caused the most damage to New Orleans. In the first twenty four hours of the hurricane there were 28 reported breaches to the wall. At nine am approximately 75% of the city was underwater. Although the levees weren't completely finished a major issue in the report of the investigation said that the primary cause of two of the major six breaches was improper design of the canal flood walls. The issue with another breach was over topping of the levees and flood walls by the storm surge. Another reason the levees failed was because of the sand. In another of the major six breaches there was overtopping due to bad maintenance on the levees. The engineers messed up by overestimating the soil strength under the levees. They also didn't take account the issue of a water filled gap which led to the destruction of part of the levee.
