In my opinion, the colonists decision to write and sign the Declaration of Independence was justified due to the Intolerable acts, unfair taxation and corruption in government and social systems. After the French and Indian war left Britain in debt, the citizens in the colonies were taxed higher and given new sets of rules that many felt were unfair. Some common products like tea, coffee, sugar and indigo were taxed at a higher price along with printed goods like newspaper, playing cards and legal documents. Britain was partially right to tax the colonists because they fought to protect the colonists rights and privileges in the French and Indian War. However, I do not agree with the invasive policies the british enforced in the colonies.…show more content…
Britain could not afford another war and was already in debt, so in effort to prevent losing money as much as possible they began regulating new rules for smuggling, called the Customs Reform. With the Customs Reform came a new trial procedure in which colonists caught smuggling would be sent to Canada to be prosecuted by a Canadian Jury and British Judge, to prevent biased outcomes. This was considered unfair to many colonists because it meant that people would be uprooted from their lives and sent to Canada. The Customs Reform was only the beginning of the unjust treatment from the British,that eventually led to The Townshend Acts which imposed more taxes on common goods and now allowed customs officials to enter any location to look for evidence of smuggling.
