Throughout American History, many men and women have created major impacts on the nation that we now call the United States of America. Benjamin Franklin helped transform America into the nation of self independence that it is today, and practically created the American dream. Ben Franklin was a true pioneer and motivated self help in America. Without Benjamin Franklin, America might not even be as modern as it is today. In fact, the United States might not even exist today. Initially, Benjamin Franklin was a renaissance man of his time. Benjamin Franklin spoke many languages including French, German, Italian, Latin, and Spanish. He also played instruments such as the violin, guitar, and harp. “Franklin, who reportedly amassed early America’s largest private library, helped expand the frontiers of science and invention. He started the American Philosophical Society, which was this country’s first scientific society and maintained the first science library, first museum, and first patent office; more than 90 members of this society went on to win Nobel Prizes.” (Powell, 1997). This quote illustrates that Benjamin Franklin wanted to put a greater push on scientific research and patent systems for the future of great American inventors. Benjamin Franklin’s efforts did not stop at science; He also wanted to create a much larger push on geography and hydrodynamics. A great example of this is the quote, “On his eight trans-Atlantic crossings, Franklin made measurements that helped chart the Gulf Stream. He pioneered the study of water flowing around a hull—hydrodynamics.” (Powell, 1997). This quote also mentions the beginning of the study of hydrodynamics, which is used in saving fuel by creating new ways for boats to move through water in a much faster and smoother manner, such as the large ships in the U.S.
