The memoir Night by Elie Wiesel takes place in the 1940s during the Holocaust. It was a time of darkness and disgust. This excerpt shows the horror and evil in Auschwitz through the eyes of a young Elie. The significance is that in the face of death, people will always seek to grab onto a slimmer of hope.
