In an excerpt from a novel by Jamaica Kincaid, the main character struggles with the excitement of the new, while still longing for home. The speaker moves from a small, tight knit community to a new, adventurous one. She eagerly waits “ to go somewhere else” (54-55), to escape her homeland, yet when the time comes, she would rather be in the comfort of her home than with the “cold” (28) uncertainty her future would bring. Her emotions encompass the span of excitement to longing for acceptance. Accepting that she has fallen into the same mindset as those she had become “impatient” (52) with, she labels herself as one with “homesickness” (49). In the beginning she excitedly explores her new home, recalling how the hope for this journey brought her happiness, and can see herself “grow used to it and like it very much” (9-10). As the passage continues, becoming duller, she shrinks to her past self. She begins to long “to be back where I[she] came from” (55-56). She longs for the comfort and security it brought her. She recalls how “impatient” (52) she became with the homesick, but now she finds that she too has followed in their footsteps. Not strong enough to resist the temptations of the past, she shivers for the warmth of the known. She begins to wonder what it would be like to strip herself of her “sad thoughts...sad feelings...discontent” (68-69). Not believing that she is strong enough to power through the hardships of unclarity to attain a greater goal, she approves of herself becoming susceptible to mindset of giving up. She becomes discouraged by the bleakness her new life seems to bear. She is unable to see the end of the storm, the end of the “overcast” (42), the “boats” (43) of opportunity. Her past life enchants her. She doesn’t see the serpent of familiarity attacking her. Loving the way familiarity treats her, she lusts for her past life.
