In the short story “American History” by Judith Ortiz Cofer, the green door symbolizes hope for Elena, the main character. The short story is about a girl named Elena who is struggling to fit in. Elena is the outcast in her school, but when Eugene comes along, she finds she is no longer alone. Even though Elena is a straight A student, she is not allowed to be in advanced classes like Eugene because English is not her first language. Eugene offers to have a study session with her, but when President Kennedy dies unexpectedly her mother begs her to go to church and pray. Disregarding her mother’s offer she heads over to Eugene’s home only to receive backlash from his mother because she was not smart like Eugene and because of her ethnicity.
