In the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, the solemn mood was made more apparent by the author’s use of theme and figurative language. First, Vonnegut uses a simile to describe the effect that George’s buzzer had on his own thoughts. “His thoughts fled in panic like bandits from a burglar alarm.” (22). The quote creates a solemn mood for the reader because when he says that his thoughts fled it shows that it was a natural thing, that he never really noticed that it always happened. Second, Vonnegut uses a hyperbole to show how passionate the dancers are to be doing what they love. “Their intentions were to touch the ceiling.” (26).
