In the short story, Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, the theme and figurative language play a key role in setting different moods. One type of figurative language used by the author was a simile to describe Harrison and the ballerina’s actions. For example, Vonnegut writes, “They leaped like deer on the moon.” on page 26. This quote makes the reader feel joyful because they finally got to take off their handicaps and they feel free! Another example is on page 24 when he wrote, “squawk” as a form of onomatopoeia.
