Called the “Moses” of her time , Harriet Tubman is one of the most enigmatic figures in American history. She spent her life changing the lives of hundreds of people. Harriet Tubman was the most important person during 1790-1850 because of her heroism along the Underground Railroad, her involvement in the Union Army, and her strong voice as an activist. Harriet Tubman never failed to make a difference in her work. Tubman was a huge part of the Underground Railroad. She was born into slavery, and after suffering through many years, she escaped. Despite the risks, she returned to Maryland to free her relatives and friends. Tubman returned to the south 19 times, and she led more than 300 men, women, and children to freedom in the North and Canada at the risk of losing her own life. She used the Underground Railroad to free hundreds of slaves. Some say that if not for her, the United States might still be a country that overlooks slavery. It’s no…show more content…
She worked as a cook, nurse and a spy for the Union Army during the American Civil War. She believed strongly in both the value of a Union victory and the destruction of slavery. She decided to help the Union Army because she wanted freedom for all of the people who were forced into slavery, not just the few she could help by herself. As the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, Tubman thrived as a leader. “Harriet Tubman, the warrior, was a popular image from the late 1850s into the Civil War, when she was allowed to ride at the head of Colonel James Montgomery's troops, and later led a squad of black spies on reconnaissance missions for the Union Army.” She led several hundreds of slaves in the Combahee River Raid. She led a group of soldiers down the Combahee River on the night of June 2, 1863. She and her troops burned down several plantations and freed over 750 enslaved blacks.
