What is patriotism? Patriotism can be defined as love, support, and defense of one’s own country. In The Man Without a Country, Edward Everett Hale symbolizes that patriotism runs deep in one man’s soul, even with a court sentence that declares one man without a country. This story was set in the Civil War Era and was written to promote unity during a time of crisis and “helped to alter the very meaning of ‘country’ in an American setting”(Gibian 39). It created a national sentiment, a national unity, and a united country. In our country there are rights for freedom of speech, and one must learn to censor one’s own words, especially in a court of law. In this story, Army lieutenant Philip Nolan, when he was found guilty during a trial for treason, cries out, “Damn the United States! I wish I may never hear of the United States again!”(Hale 7). Be careful what you wish for, it might just come true. Nolan was then sentenced to spend the rest of his life at sea, without any word or news of the United States. There are many examples throughout this story of Nolan’s patriotism. This man always wore a regulation Army uniform and was called “plain buttons” because he wasn’t permitted to adorn the official army button (Hale 22).
