What does it mean to be an American? If asked this question answers would differ depending on different beliefs. The “American Dream”, citizenship, and patriotism helps define what it means to be an American. To be an American one has to follow the American dream. What is the American dream? It is confusing to give a solid answer for that question. This dream means different things to different people, but they have the same basic goals. Most people think of the American dream is to be wealthy and raise a family in a nice house and a safe neighborhood. This is not always the case; Anzia Yezierska author of “America and I” explains her journey to America as an immigrant from Poland. She work for an Americanized family from Poland who she admired. She thought the family would help her achieve her dream to be successful. Instead they left her on her own without pay. She realized being an “American” was not easy, and came to the conclusion that she would have to work hard for what she wanted.…show more content…
There are many types of Americans such as Asian-American, African-American, Mexican-American, and so on. A true American cherishes their freedoms,rights, and citizenship. People in other countries wish they had what we have. Even though we are all Americans we all don’t get treated the same which is not fair. Langston Hughes poet of “Let America Be America Again” explains what each different type of American had to go through to be an American. The Negro bearing slavery’s scars, the red man driven from the land, and the immigrants clutching the they seek.
