The Right to Remain Free! Have you been the victim of injustice? We all like to believe that our justice system will keep us safe from such misfortune the Shawshank Redemption written by Frank Darabont, tell us that hope is a stronger force than oppression. One must be able to maintain a hopeful mentality, something Andy does expertly until he is denied access to clear his name which pushes him over the edge. Andy also has the ability to give others hope, others being those who have given up on freedom or have been “institutionalized”. Bang! Bang! Bang! Went the shots that killed Tommy who was murdered for having evidence regarding Andy’s criminal offence? He could have been a free man but that would jeopardize the warden’s profitable dictatorship and he would have none of it. After this display of power, who would be brave enough to tell the truth? This leaves Andy with no legal way of regaining his freedom, which he loses all hope in, pushing him over the edge to take matters into his own hands in a different way. This is the first time we see Andy lose hope in his endeavors.…show more content…
On the other hand there is a majority of people who lack this finesse; they call themselves “institutionalized men”. Even when they have done their time in prison and are set free these men can’t seem to find hope on the outside. Brooks is a good example of this, after several years spent in jail it became comfortable. He knew a lot of friendly people, life was simple and work was easier. But when set free these aspects of prison caused opposite effects and harmed him until his suicide. What about red? He was set free too but didn’t end up like Brooks because he had a reason, or a goal which sustained him with hope that Andy bequeathed upon
