Hunger Games Heroism “The hero is the same, but the costume changes” (Campbell). The movie The Hunger Games, based on the book by Suzanne Collins, is about a dystopian nation, Panem, divided up into twelve districts. As a result of a previous rebellion, each year in Panem two victims, one girl and one boy, are selected from each district to fighting in the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is televised across the nation showing the kids fight until only one victim is alive. The winner then receives food and necessities for the entire district. Katniss Everdeen, the protagonist of the story, volunteers as tribute in replace of her younger sister Prim. This is the beginning of the hero’s journey for Katniss. The birth of Katniss is neither magical of mysterious. Some viewers may believe that Katniss’s childhood is questionable because of the type of district she lives in; however, it is easy for someone to predict what it was like based off the movie. Because District Twelve has only had one previous winner, no one expected Katniss to win. When she does win, her identity becomes in question because no one, even herself, expected her to survive. Katniss was betrayed by Peeta in the beginning of the games. Peeta helped the top districts’ alliance hunt down Katniss. A tragic flaw that Katniss has is protectiveness. The only reason she became a tribute was to protect her sister. Also, she risks her life to go receive medical supplies from the feast for Peeta when he becomes injured. Katniss never encounters death at the hands of evil and does not have a resurrection myth. The only special power Katniss has is her archery skills. However, this skill is more from her training to use the bow than a power she was naturally born with. In conclusion, Katniss Everdeen cannot be considered an epic hero because she does not experience all of the stages of the monomyth and does not contain all of the epic hero
