Act I, scene i
“If music be the food of love, play on.”
The literary device used in this line is a metaphor. It is considered a metaphor because the phrase is a figure of speech and Orsino is comparing music to food and food to love.
The theme(s) the line suggests Orsino is in love, feeling depressed and rejected. He is depressed because he thinks he is in love with Olivia and she is not ready to be courted by the Duke. He requested music to play so he can daydream, the music would evoke the feeling of love and he would not need love in his life.
The significance of “Twelfth Night” is that it is symbolic. Twelfth Night represents a great revelation and celebration that will occur. Thy small pipe is as the maiden’s organ, shrill and sound, And all is semblative a woman’s part.” (I. 4. 30-33) The effect it has on the audience is conflicting emotions, loyalty to her master, Orsino is falling into love with Cesario “Viola”, and her own desires/needs.
All the references to Olivia in the first four scenes of the play are: she is beautiful, young, emotional, wealthy, mourning the loss of her brother, virtuous, and a noble Illyrian lady.

We learned the character of Feste through this kind of humor (satire) is that he uses humor to tell the truth or facts in situations.
Sir Toby’s stereotypical role of the comic drunk gives this play comedy by being drunk because you say random things, think you are strong, brave, and cool, but you are an idiot for being drunk, compared to Festes humor because he is smart, but he shows it in a funny way.
The characteristics that caused Olivia to fall in love so quickly with Cesario is that he came from a noble and wealthy family, he is romantic and would sing love songs to the one he loves. She believes faith brought her and Cesario…show more content… Even though they have a lot in common they should pursue other suitors who they really love instead of the idea of being in love and in a marriage.
Viola and her brother Sebastian was shipwrecked and her brother was lost at sea
There is not enough evidence that Viola’s brother is dead and as such there is hope he is found alive.
Olivia’s brother died and she is mourning and refused to marry or fall in love
Olivia started to fall in love with Cesario who is really a woman. This shows she is ready to love again. She will be disappointed Cesario is really a woman.
Viola changed her identity and became a young man under the name of Cesario
Viola/Cesario identity would be revealed and cause heart break for Olivia. Orsino would be happy because he like Viola/Cesario and can marry Viola if he chooses to. Viola has a twin brother Sebastian who looks exactly like her and Oliva can have a relationship with
