“I’m climbing Everest with flip-flop”, Piper Chapman, the main character in the movie of the “Orange is the new Black”, describes her hostile prison situation. This simple sentence gives us an idea of the toughness and difficulties facing by the inmates in their prison life. We all know that it would not be an easy task for prisoners in their sentencing period as they have to learn a totally new set of norms and to prepare for a big-life lesson; yet, sending offenders to prison is seen as a way of punishment as well as a way of maintaining and promoting social justice in the society. The “Orange is the Black” is a great movie that mirrors the hard times of the inmates and tells the auiendece something behind the scene in the prison. In this essay, I intend to probe into the inmates’ prison-life by referring to the idea of emotional labor theory, mental health, and the sexual relationship in regarding to the movie contents.…show more content… Simply speaking, officers are situated in an oppressive and powerful position in the jail. The Emotional labor Theory, referring to “the dichotomy between real emotion and external fake expression1, can be best to illustrate by the scenes of Piper when she is being sent to do something she doesn't good at (electoral works) instead of getting into her preference job about education2 and she got sexual assault when she had a body-check by a male officer in the screwdriver-losing case3. Applying the Emotional labor Theory to Chapman’s situations, Piper understands that she can not expose her real feeling due to her powerlessness identity in the jail, even though her private self is full of anger and resentful. As a result, Piper’s real self is no longer real in front of the public because of the force under the prison-organization-
