Estrogen in our water and food supply is becoming an increasing problem, and many fear it could be causing harmful side effects in children, pre-pubescent males and adults. The researchers in this experiment noticed that, although a lot of research has been about estrogen in our water/food, there had not been a study done to figure out just how much estrogen we take in and if that amount exceeds the acceptable daily limits (ADLs). If they could determine the amount, they would be able to determine if there were adverse effects on humans drinking the water or food that contains estrogen. The researchers took a look at the drinking water in the United States and a person’s normal dietary intake. We get a lot of estrogen from things like milk because of the animal it comes from has natural hormones. They wanted to compare the two to see how much more or less estrogen was in our drinking water. Then they compared those numbers with the World Health Organization benchmark for high-toxicity levels to see if our drinking water is safe. The researchers estimated the concentrations of estrogen in drinking water by using the Pharmaceutical Assessment and Transport Evaluation or PhATE. PhATE created and predicated environmental concentrations (PECs) in a variety of ways by using many drinking water…show more content…
They created two benchmarks, the first was the estrogen intake in milk for small children, and second the estrogen intake of adults who had an omnivorous diet. Unsurprisingly, the researchers found that women who were taking prescription estrogen had the highest estrogen intake, followed by babies who drunk soy-milk then babies who drunk a milk formula or were breast fed, then finally children and
